The installation consists of five sculptural objects (frameworks of political entities), archival documents and the video ‘The Raft of the Medusa’ filmed at the Verkh-Isetsky Pond in Yekaterinburg, Russia. All the objects have brief historical notes and represent the histories of the temporary republics — the Ural, Far Eastern, Crimean People’s, Tatar and North Ingria Republics, all sharing some principles of separation and tracing their origin back to Tommaso Campanella’s long-forgotten utopian work ‘The City of the Sun’. The list could be extended to the Bavarian Soviet Republic of 1919 or Gabriele D'Annunzio’s Free State of Fiume of 1920-24, but the author has deliberately limited the study to the territory of the ‘empire’ he grew up in and whose future concerns him.
